Second Annual Awards of the C. A. and C .C.Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research

The second Annual Research Paper Prize, and the Lifetime Achievement Prize of the Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research will be awarded by June 2008. The Awards consist of a certificate and one thousand (1,000) dollar per prize to be used at the discretion of the awardees. For more details visit the Foundation website at “www. vlpbp.org”.

The Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research is a tax-exempt institution, located in Champaign, Illinois, and dedicated to the promotion of Fundamental Research at the National and International levels.

Among other things, the "Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research will deliver annual prizes for the best research papers in the fields of chloroplast biochemistry and molecular biology , as well as one yearly Life-time Achievement Award for a qualified chloroplast scientist. Gradually the number of awards will be increased form two to nine awards to eventually cover the nine chloroplast research areas listed below . In due time, the Foundation will feature papers of the month and papers of the year to promote the best research on chloroplast biochemistry and molecular biology.

The Foundation is run by a group of twelve scientists that comprise

  • a President of the Board (C. A. Rebeiz, crebeiz@uiuc.edu) and eight (8) Board Directors, that represent eight chloroplast research areas of interest, namely:
  • Thomas Bach, University of Stasbourg, France for prenyllipids (Thomas.Bach@bota-ulp.u-strasbg.fr) .
  • Hans Bohnert, University of Illinois, for chloroplast stress, (bohnerth@life.uiuc.edu),
  • Christoph Benning, Michigan State University, for chloroplast lipids, (benning@msu.edu),
  • Henry Daniell, Central Florida University, for chloroplast transformation (daniell@mail.ucf.edu),
  • Natalia Dudareva, Purdue University, for chloroplast isoprenoids and terpenoids, dudarev@purdue.edu),
  • Govindjee, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for the light reactions of photosynthesis (gov@life.uiuc.edu)
  • Kenneth Hoober, Arizona State University, for pigment-protein interactions (khoober@asu.edu),
  • Archie Portis, University of Illinois and USDA, for Rubisco-photosynthesis (arportis@uiuc.edu),
  • Baishnab Tripathy, Jawaharlal Nehru University, for chloroplast tetrapyrroles,(bctripathy@mail.jnu.ac.in),
  • Julian Whitelegge, University of California at Los Angeles, for chloroplast genomics and proteomics (jpw@chem.ucla.edu), and
  • Carole Rebeiz, Secretary-Treasurer, Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research (ccrebeiz@aol.com)

The Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research Paper Prize, will be awarded to the corresponding author of a selected research paper published during an academic year and dealing with one of the following areas of chloroplast biochemical and molecular biological research:

  • chloroplast tetrapyrroles,
  • chloroplast isoprenoids,
  • chloroplast prenyllipids,
  • chloroplast lipids
  • chloroplast pigment-proteins interactions,
  • chloroplast genomics and proteomics,
  • chloroplast transformation,
  • Rubisco-photosynthesis, and
  • biology of chloroplast stress.

The Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research Lifetime Achievement Prize will be awarded to a selected scientist who has made continued outstanding contributions during his or her career to one or more of the nine fields of chloroplast research listed above.

USA and international scientists are eligible to apply. External-nominations and self-nominations are acceptable. A letter explaining the novel and outstanding features of the nominated work, or the contributions of the nominated scientist, should accompany every submission.

The closing date for the research paper submissions, and lifetime achievement nominations, for the June 2008 awards is December 31, 2007. Papers published or accepted for publication and/or posted on line between January 1 and December 31, 2007, as well as lifetime achievement award nominations received between January 1 and December 31, 2007 are eligible for consideration.
